Our highly anticipated Senior Band uniforms are ready for use. Please read the following information in regards to care, maintenance and hemming. Our debut performance will be the Remembrance Day Assemblies on November 10 and 11 respectively.
Congratulations to all of the student musician's for their successful opening concert of the year! We are proud of the efforts and excellence so early in the school year!
All Grade 9 students were provided with a black Highwood band shirt. We are asking that all members be responsible in having the remainder of the uniform organized. Students need to have black bottoms, black socks and shoes. If there are issues with providing any of these articles for future performances, please let the Band Teachers know as soon as possible.
The Senior Band uniform is in transit from the distributor. The only element of this outfit that students are required to provide are black socks/stockings and shoes. This outfit is quite "fancy" so think about having some more formal, yet comfortable, black shoes for our performances. Again, please let the Band Teachers know if there are individual issues with providing this addition to the uniform.
Please find attached the Highwood Band Handbook for the 2015-16 school year. The last 4 pages will be sent home to be filled out. If you are new to the Highwood Band Program, please take a few moments to read about our fine program, along with the expectations and policies that allow for our program to excel.
Please feel free to contact either Mr. Jace Stearn or Mr. Paul Stelter if you have any questions regarding the Highwood Band Program!
Welcome back to all returning students, and a warm welcome to any new students in grade 9-12 playing in the Highwood High School Bands for the first time!
We are off to a great start. We would like to encourage the establishment of practice routines early in the school year. Ensure that your child has a regular and consistent routine that will lead to success.
Uniforms have been ordered for the Senior Band! While we will continue to use the traditional band shirt for grade 9 musicians, the senior bands will soon be able to perform in their new concert uniform. Stay tuned for more information! If you happen to have one or two of the band shirts around your home, we would still like to have them back!
Come back to the website for regular updates, along with trip forms/information and any group recordings that have been made.

The Highwood Bands are off to a great start! To this point in the year, we have had workshops for both jazz and concert band, successful concerts and festivals, and overall significant commitment to learning in the classroom. We have welcomed Mr. Jeff Graham back into the fold here at Highwood - it is great to have him back!
A few upcoming things:
November 28th Highwood Jazz Night
This event has unfortunately been postponed. We traditionally have 3-4 other schools join us for our event, but many are not able to join us this year. We will postpone to a TBA date early in the new year. Highwood Jazz Orchestra will still be performing at the Westmount School Jazz Night, on Wednesday, November 27th, in Okotoks. Please contact Mr. Graham if you have any questions about the event. Both HJO 1 and the Grade 9 Jazz Band will be participating in workshops with this year's guest artist, Joel Gray, trumpet player from Edmonton. We have worked with Mr. Gray in the past, and look forward to the experience of working with him again.
December 12th Highwood Celebrating Christmas Concert, 7pm
This concert has traditionally been an opportunity to come together and celebrate the meaning of the Christmas season, as well as collect necessary items for the High River Food Bank. We understand the issues that are surrounding so many of our families and the community of high River. We would like to continue to offer support for those in need this year. A list of needed items will be sent home prior to our evening concert, please consider bringing items that are listed as a priority. As always, all cash and non-perishable food donation items will be delivered to the local food bank.
As we move into the post Holiday time, we are quickly moving towards learning more advanced/technical music. At this stage in any musicians' development, it is critical to ensure that regular practice is being completed. Like any team sport or activity, we are like a chain, and only as strong as our weakest link. Please support your son/daughter by ensuring that they have regular, consistent, and focused practice time. We recommend a minimum of 60 minutes each week as a reinforcement of skills discovered during class or rehearsal. Please feel free to contact one of the directors if you have questions about quality practice - we would be more than happ
